Solid Surface: A Blend of Natural Minerals & Resin

What is a solid surface tub? It is a man-made material that is created from a blend of crushed stone (minerals) mixed with a resin binding agent. The mixture is poured into a mold and baked in a large oven. Then the bathtub is finished by hand. The result is a beautiful freestanding solid surface tub in a matte or glossy finish. This manufacturing process allows for thinner rims and more delicate shapes than the acrylic counterparts. Solid surface was first introduced by DuPont in 1967 under the name of Corian, used in counter top construction. It is new to the bathtub world but it has been around for a white in other industries. There are different formulas used but different companies to create a solid surface bathtub. They are similar in that the surface is a non-porous, low-maintenance material. It is naturally resistant to stains, mildew, and mold. Its hard, non-porous surface prevents dirt from accumulating and resists stains. Cleaning is easy with a soft cloth, any mild dish soap and water. And, if the unfortunate happens, minor cuts and scratches can usually be buffed or polished out of the finish. The high insulating properties of the solid surface tubs keep water warm longer. One thing to be careful of, a solid surface tub is much heavier than an acrylic one.
